To hire an investigator, you typically must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least age 18, and able to engage in a legal contract.
- Have an acceptable reason to have someone investigated or to obtain information about someone. This is to prevent other people from being "stalked", for example.
- Be able to provide the investigator with some type of deposit or retainer (each investigations agency will have a different policy regarding deposits, payments, etc.).
- Not have an injunction, restraining order, or any court order prohibiting you from hiring an investigator to conduct surveillance and or obtain information about another person. A "third party" is often included within these court injunctions, and a licensed investigator would be included within this "third party" condition. When in doubt, advise the investigator that you have an injunction the first time you speak with him or her.
